Unite Union Withholds Endorsement of Labour's Election Manifesto

Unite, Labour's largest trade union supporter, has declined to endorse the party's 2024 election manifesto, saying it falls short in safeguarding workers' rights and jobs in the oil and gas sector. This decision casts doubt on whether Unite will provide financial backing for Labour's general election campaign, given that it contributed three million pounds in 2019. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that the manifesto aims to significantly boost workers' rights and contribute to economic growth.

The union's General Secretary Sharon Graham had cautioned that there are 'no blank cheques' for Labour.

Unite seeks the abolition of zero-hours contracts and a ban on 'hire and fire' practices.

At the same time, Unison is pushing for commitments to higher pay and improved wage bargaining.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that the manifesto aims to significantly boost workers' rights and contribute to economic growth.

The manifesto, which must be approved by various Labour bodies, will also include recognition of a Palestinian state and significant plans for planning reforms, housebuilding, recruitment of teachers and police, and cutting net migration.

Despite some union dissatisfaction, the document was approved in a recent meeting, reportedly receiving applause.
