For the first time, the UN Security Council has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the Ramadan period, aiming for a long-term truce.

This unanimous decision, excluding the abstaining US, marks a significant shift after months of conflict and previous US vetoes. The resolution, celebrated with applause, seeks an end to hostilities, the release of hostages taken by militants since October 7, and a durable peace.

Despite Russia's objections to modifying the ceasefire's terminology, the resolution passed, reflecting widespread international concern and efforts led by Algeria, Slovenia, and Switzerland.

The US's evolving stance indicates mounting frustration with Israel's military strategies, amidst increasing civilian casualties in Gaza.

Unlike previous proposals, this resolution directly calls for a ceasefire without tying it to other negotiations, showing a unified international demand for peace and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where blockade and conflict have heightened famine risks and hindered aid delivery.
