UN Delivers Essential Aid to Northern Gaza Amidst Brief Fighting Ceasefire

The UN reported that 61 trucks loaded with medical supplies, food, and water reached northern Gaza during a lull in the conflict, penetrating the blockaded region. From Nitzana, Israel, the UN orchestrated the dispatch of 200 additional trucks to Gaza, with 187 successfully crossing the border by early evening.

Key medical equipment, including eleven ambulances and several vehicles, was delivered to Al-Shifa hospital to support evacuation efforts. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted the importance of sustained breaks in hostilities to increase aid deliveries and thanked regional Red Crescent societies for their assistance.

In the wake of a truce facilitating exchanges, the UN noted that 137 trucks had previously provided aid to Gaza. The OCHA applauded the ongoing hostage releases and urged for the release of all hostages to continue. With Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S. mediating, Hamas anticipates releasing 50 hostages in exchange for 150 Palestinian prisoners across the four-day ceasefire.

The conflict escalated when Hamas breached the Israeli border on October 7, leading to the loss of approximately 1,200 lives, as per Israeli reports. Israel then intensified its military response, resulting in nearly 15,000 deaths, predominantly among civilians, as claimed by Gaza's Hamas-led government.
