Prystaiko, who had been in the post since 2020, was fired by the president through a presidential decree, which also removed him as Ukraine's representative to the International Maritime Organization.
The move came as a surprise, as the ambassador was reportedly on his way to an event in Essex where a road was set to be officially renamed after Zelensky.
Prystaiko had criticized Zelensky's promise to thank UK Defense Minister Ben Wallace every morning, calling it "unhealthy sarcasm." The remark was made after Wallace warned Ukraine that its allies were "not Amazon" and that Kyiv needed to show gratitude for weapons it received to persuade Western politicians to give more.
Wallace's remarks had stirred anger in Kyiv, and he later said his words had been "somewhat misrepresented." The sacking of Prystaiko comes a year after Zelensky dismissed five ambassadors at once in what was seen as a reshuffle.
However, the dismissal of Andriy Melnyk, the ambassador to Germany, was particularly notable.
Melnyk was known for his outspoken social media presence and had become a familiar face in Germany with repeated appeals for military aid to Ukraine.
However, he was seen to have stepped out of line when he accused German Chancellor Olaf Scholz of acting like a "sulky liver sausage" when the leader was slow to take up a presidential invitation to visit Kyiv.
The sacking of Prystaiko has raised questions about the Ukrainian president's approach to diplomacy.
While Zelensky has been known for his unconventional approach to politics, his decision to dismiss the ambassador after criticism from a foreign country raises concerns about how he will handle sensitive issues in the future.
In a related development, a road in Harlow, a town just north of London, was officially renamed Zelenskyy Avenue in honor of the Ukrainian president.
