The Wagner rebellion, a revolt by a private army based in Russia, has caused chaos and shown that no one is in control, according to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The leader of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, called off the march on Moscow to avoid bloodshed.

Prigozhin claimed that his men were rebelling to remove corrupt and incompetent Russian commanders.

However, in an audio message, Prigozhin said his fighters would return to base due to the risk of Russian blood being spilled.

The announcement defused the situation to some extent, but Zelensky said that it showed the Russian leadership was not in control.

Zelensky urged Western partners to support Ukraine and to help it "protect Europe" with planes and weapons.

A video obtained by Reuters shows Russian troops driving tanks and troop carriers towards Moscow, more than halfway there.

They were fired upon by a helicopter.

A private army led by Yevgeny Prigozhin captured the headquarters of Russia's Southern Military District in Rostov without firing a shot.

Prigozhin accused Russian military officials of lying to Putin and the public about Russian battlefield losses.

He claims they are presenting false information to the president.
