UK Travel: Millions Hit the Roads and Rails in Anticipation of Christmas

Traffic congestion is expected near shopping centers, sports stadiums, and ports, with particular focus on the AA's anticipation of delays. Rail travelers have limited time to use London Paddington before it closes on Christmas Eve, and King's Cross is operating a reduced schedule.

There have been minor delays at Dover's ferry port to France, but the situation has since improved. The AA cautioned travelers about probable significant jams, particularly near Heathrow Airport, Trafford Centre in Manchester, and Avonmouth on Saturday. However, road traffic likely peaked on Friday among holiday-goers and daily commuters.

The AA advises planning for potential holdups. The RAC recommends traveling outside of peak hours between 11:00 GMT and 18:00 GMT.

Meanwhile, late-season shopping is expected to cause busy high streets nationwide. After the Channel Tunnel shutdown due to a workers' strike, there was a rush for ferries, but Dover Port has reported no current delays.

Adverse weather conditions are forecast to create further travel disturbances. Northern Scotland and parts of England may experience high winds, with two yellow wind warnings signaling disruption and potential damage. Alongside, much of Wales is under a yellow rain warning with potential flooding. The Met Office anticipates widespread rain across the UK on Christmas Day.
