The UK is poised to enhance its aviation capacity while maintaining environmental safeguards, according to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander.

In remarks delivered at the AirportsUK annual dinner, Alexander expressed her commitment to simultaneously advancing the aviation industry and protecting the environment, stating that she would 'never accept' the notion that these goals are mutually exclusive.

The Cabinet minister's comments come in anticipation of a critical decision regarding the proposed expansion of Luton Airport, which is expected by an April 3 deadline.

Recently, Alexander signaled a willingness to support the second runway proposal at Gatwick Airport, contingent upon adjustments addressing concerns such as noise mitigation and public transport access.

Additionally, the UK Government has shown backing for Heathrow Airport's expansion plans, with Heathrow expected to submit detailed proposals for a third runway later this summer.

Alexander highlighted that several major airports in the South East are experiencing capacity constraints, describing them as 'bursting at the seams' due to long-ignored capacity issues.

She remarked on the necessity of balancing economic benefits with social and environmental commitments, underscoring the importance of responsible airport expansion.

The proposed developments at Luton Airport include significant upgrades to its infrastructure, such as expanding the existing terminal, constructing a second terminal, extending the Dart rail link, and developing new taxiways and parking facilities.
