This move is in response to the threat posed by Russia, particularly after its invasion of Ukraine. The deployment represents the most significant British contribution to NATO in 40 years and reaffirms the UK's commitment to the alliance amid growing global challenges.

British forces, including army, navy, and air personnel, will join forces with 31 NATO members and Sweden. The exercises, termed "Exercise Steadfast Defender," will see the deployment of advanced military assets, including jets, warships, and special operations units across Europe and other locations.

Key elements of this contingent will be the Carrier Strike Group, featuring an aircraft carrier with F-35B fighter jets and helicopters, operating in the North Atlantic and Baltic regions.

On land, 16,000 British soldiers equipped with tanks, artillery, and other military hardware will be deployed in Eastern Europe in the coming months.

In his comprehensive speech, Shapps outlined the necessity for a "hard-headed" approach, addressing the heightened geopolitical tensions with nations such as China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia. He emphasized that NATO faces critical decisions as adversaries become more interconnected.

Addressing recent UK-US strikes on Iran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen, Shapps stated these were a standalone response to attacks on Red Sea shipping lanes.

While he didn't forecast future military actions, Shapps underscored the importance of keeping major waterways open for international shipping.
