UK Teenage Boys: High-Risk Group for Sextortion - Teachers Urged to Spot Signs
The National Crime Agency in the UK has warned teachers to be on the lookout for signs of sextortion among their pupils, particularly teenage boys.
Criminal gangs, often based abroad, are using real and fake images to blackmail victims.
The process from initial contact to extortion can happen within an hour.
Sextortion is a callous crime with no concern for victims or the lives that might be destroyed.
The NCA's director general, James Babbage, stated that the primary motivation behind sextortion crimes is financial gain.
In these cases, victims are coerced into paying money or meeting other financial demands under the threat of having intimate pictures released.
Some criminals trick victims into creating or sending the material, while others create digital mockups that appear real enough to carry a threat.
The warning comes after the suicide of a 16-year-old boy from Scotland named Murray Dowey, who took his own life following a sextortion attempt.
His family urged anyone potentially targeted in such a way to speak to those around them.
A mother spoke about her experience of losing her son to sextortion, which occurred when he was only a few feet away from her.
She urged people to put down their phones, seek help, and not handle such situations alone.
The National Crime Agency's Child Protection Team issued an alert to teachers in the UK about a significant increase in global sextortion cases.
