UK-Supplied Tanks Used in Ukraine's Surprise Incursion into Russia

UK-donated Challenger 2 tanks are being used by Ukraine in its surprise advance into Russia, confirming their critical role in the conflict. The Ministry of Defence emphasized Ukraine’s right to self-defense with UK-supplied arms. As states of emergency are declared in Russian regions, the advance shows Ukraine's strategic use of Western-donated military equipment.
UK-donated Challenger 2 tanks have been confirmed to be in use by Ukraine in its recent incursion into Russian territory, a UK source reported.

While the Ministry of Defence has not officially commented on the specific UK weapons being used, they reiterated Ukraine's right to use UK-supplied arms for self-defense.

This incursion supports the use of various donated weapons, although Storm Shadow missiles are restricted from hitting Russian targets.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged for the removal of limits on using long-range weapons, hoping to pressure Russia towards seeking peace.

The UK was a pioneer in providing 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine in 2023, and other Western-supplied armoured vehicles have been seen in Russia, without Western objections.

While the secrecy of Ukraine’s operations remains, Western military experts praise Ukraine’s tactical use of combined arms manoeuvres in this offensive.

However, concerns linger around potential escalation and significant losses.

This operation aimed at diverting Russian forces has led to states of emergency in Kursk and Belgorod regions, with evacuation plans for civilians.

Legal experts within NATO have discussed that self-defense rights cover counter-attacks, supporting Ukraine’s actions.
