UK Strikes Deal to Potentially End Senior Doctor Strikes
The UK government and medical unions have made progress with an agreement that could halt ongoing strikes by senior doctors in England. The Department of Health and Social Care plans to simplify the pay structure from January, speeding up the advancement to higher pay scales and linking salary progressions more directly to demonstrated skills and experience.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised the agreement as balanced, emphasizing its fairness to both consultants and taxpayers while supporting efforts to control inflation. Sunak has prioritized reducing NHS backlogs ahead of an anticipated election next year, with more than 7.8 million in England awaiting hospital procedures and strikes having postponed over a million appointments.
Amidst the agreement, a separate pay dispute with junior doctors persists.
Members of the BMA and the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association (HCSA) will vote on the proposal in the forthcoming weeks, during which no further strikes will occur. While the BMA has expressed satisfaction with the negotiations, the HCSA maintains reservations about certain aspects and will remain neutral as its members decide on acceptance.
