UK stocks ended higher on Tuesday, with the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 indexes both rising by 0.6% and 1.2%, respectively.

The gains were driven by a positive reaction to US bank earnings and a rally in British homebuilders.

The FTSE 350 homebuilders index logged its best day in five months, with peer-to-peer lender Lendy surging 22% and housebuilder Berkeley Group rising 5.7%.

The gains were attributed to investors' anticipation that interest rates will peak sooner than expected.

Ocado, the online supermarket and technology group, also had a strong day, surging 19% after it reported a return to underlying profit in the first half and kept its financial guidance for the year.

Meanwhile, on Wall Street, the S&P 500 rose after several major US banks reported upbeat quarterly earnings.

JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America all posted higher net income due to growth in net interest income.

According to Shanti Kelemen, chief investment officer at M&G Wealth and &me, the gains in the homebuilding sector were also influenced by the downward trend in gilt yields and expectations of lower inflation.

Investors will now shift their focus to the June consumer prices data, which is expected to show a decline in inflation to 8.2% from 8.7% in the previous month.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile food, energy, alcohol, and tobacco prices, is also expected to remain steady at 7.1% on a year-over-year basis.

Overall, the positive sentiment on Wall Street and the gains in the homebuilding sector lifted the UK's main stock indexes higher on Tuesday.
