UK shop price inflation hits lowest since June 2022

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported that UK consumers experienced the smallest rise in store prices in over a year, although retailers may struggle to maintain this trend of easing inflation. As of November, annual shop price inflation fell to 4.3%, marking the weakest rate since June 2022 and a drop from October's 5.2%.

This represents the sixth consecutive month of slowing price increases. Specifically, food inflation decreased to 7.8% from the prior year's 8.8%, with a slight increase of 0.3% between October and November. Meanwhile, non-food inflation softened to 2.5% annually, down from 3.4%.

BRC's Chief Executive Helen Dickinson warned that falling inflation rates could potentially halt or reverse due to factors like rising business rates, new regulations, and an increased minimum wage.

In the broader context, UK's overall consumer price inflation reached a peak of 11.1% in October 2022, falling to 4.6% a year later. Despite this downtrend, the Bank of England has stopped its sequence of raising interest rates, which had continued over 14 rounds. However, the bank's officials, including Governor Andrew Bailey, have indicated it's premature to consider reducing borrowing costs.
