Katharine Birbalsingh, known as the UK's strictest headteacher, criticized Marks & Spencer for their Christmas advert, claiming it disregards the spirit of Christmas by promoting selfishness.

She expressed her concerns that this message contradicts the values of self-sacrifice and gratitude she teaches her students. Additionally, M&S faced criticism and later apologized for an Instagram post featuring Christmas hats burning in a fireplace, which some perceived as resembling the colors of the Palestinian flag. The retailer removed the post after recognizing it caused unintended offense.
