Cameron acknowledged that civilian fatalities have been lower in Gaza's southern region according to Israeli reports and encouraged further reduction. He stressed the necessity for a strategic, discerning engagement with Hamas operatives.
Together with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Cameron previously advocated for a lasting truce in Gaza, acknowledging the extensive civilian deaths. He clarified that a cessation of hostilities that leaves Hamas in control of any Gaza territory would be untenable and incompatible with a two-state resolution.
A true resolution, Cameron argued, requires neutralizing the threat Hamas poses to Israel, referring to the significant October 7 attack launched by the group, which resulted in substantial Israeli casualties and kidnappings, as well as severe conflict-related damage and loss of life in Gaza as reported by local authorities.
