UK Regulator Plans To Make Tech Giants Give Greater Data Access To Rivals

UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) intends to enforce new regulations compelling major tech corporations, such as Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, and Apple, to share more data with competitors and restrict product promotion.

The changes fall under new governmental powers that the CMA expects to gain.

As part of its increased post-Brexit authority, the CMA has shown its readiness to confront large tech firms by intervening in high-profile acquisitions, such as Microsoft's moves to purchase Activision Blizzard and partner with OpenAI.

CMA Chief Sarah Cardell is set to announce at a Silicon Valley event that the new digital market rules will stimulate innovation and benefit consumers through new products.

The agency's Digital Markets Unit, established over two years ago, focuses on dynamic sectors like social media and will enforce these rules once the necessary legislation passes through parliament.

With these regulations, the CMA aims to open 3 to 4 investigations in the first year and prevent tech giants from unfairly privileging their products. This includes mandating interoperability, clarifying algorithmic transparency, and ensuring consumer choice.
