UK Regulator Initiates Review of Supermarket Loyalty Schemes

UK's competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), is set to investigate supermarket loyalty programs, including Tesco's Clubcard and Sainsbury's Nectar, to assess their effects on customer pricing and market competition.

Despite the success of these programs in offering discounts for members, the CMA has concerns that some brands may unfairly inflate prices. Nonetheless, alternatives are often available for cost-conscious consumers.

The authority showed particular concern about the baby formula industry, suggesting limited competition might be causing higher prices for parents.

An earlier finding in July concluded that the country's significant food price inflation, which peaked at 19% in March before moderating to 10.1% by October, was not due to a lack of competition among supermarkets.

The CMA's scrutiny spanned across various product segments, including baby formula and poultry to bakery and pet food.
