The UK experienced its hottest day of 2024, with temperatures reaching 28.3C (82.9F) in Wisley, Surrey.
Yellow heat health alerts remain in effect for most of England, including eight regions such as East and West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, London, Yorkshire and the Humber, and North West.
Scotland and Northern Ireland also recorded their highest temperatures this year, while Wales did not beat its May record.
The alerts, meant to protect vulnerable individuals, are set until 17:00 on Thursday.
Forecasters expect temperatures to peak at 30C in some parts this week.
The heatwave led to very high pollen levels and warmer, humid nights.
Cooler conditions are anticipated towards the end of the week as colder air moves in from the west.
