UK Prime Minister Launches Controversial Plan to House Asylum Seekers on Barges to Save Taxpayer Money

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that the government will house more asylum seekers on barges to save taxpayer money.

Two extra barges will house about 1,000 migrants, and one barge is set to be docked in Portland.

Sunak claims that this move is part of his flagship policy to "Stop the Boats" and reduce the number of unauthorized crossings from northern France to the southern English coast.

The government also says that they are doing better than other European countries in this regard.

However, it is difficult to determine whether the decrease is due to the government's policies or other factors.

Sunak has also claimed that the number of Albanian migrants arriving by small boats has fallen by almost 90%, and a deal with Albania has seen 1,800 asylum-seekers turned back.

The opposition Labour leader has accused the government of promoting a "policy that doesn't work" which is "costing a fortune for the taxpayer".

The government's migration bill is also facing criticism for its potential to curb migrants' ability to seek asylum in the UK and break international law.
