UK Prepares for Snow as Cold Weather Tightens Its Grip

The UK is preparing for snowfall and icy conditions as a cold spell persists. After weekend temperatures dipped below zero, some areas anticipate lows of -8C (17.6F) on Tuesday.

The lowest autumn temperature of -7.7C was recorded in Shap, Cumbria. Despite uncertainty in weather predictions, snow is expected, particularly in the northern and eastern regions.

Rural Scotland and northern England, having already experienced snow, are preparing for more along with potential frosty nights with temperatures hitting -2C to -5C and possibly -8C. The Met Office notes snowfall mainly near the North Sea coast with minimal accumulation.

The week started cloudy and damp but will see clearer skies before conditions become more changeable. Temperatures are set to linger between 2C to 7C, below seasonal norms. While high ground may see more snow, there's a possibility of flakes reaching lower levels and even some wintry mix in southern UK later in the week.

Forecasting UK snow in December can be challenging due to the clash between tropical and Arctic air masses, affecting precipitation type. Monday saw central Scotland chilled by frost, with Tyndrum hitting -6.4C, while the rest of the country faced rain.

Heavy rain is expected in Wales and south-west England, but conditions will brighten as the low-pressure moves towards Europe, although Scotland and north-east England may still see showers and hill snow.

The chill will continue into midweek, with sunnier skies forecasted. However, a low-pressure system on Thursday might bring snow over high ground in the south. Southern England and Wales will experience a brief warming before temperatures fall again.
