UK Post Office Chairman to Depart Amid Fallout from Horizon IT Scandal
The UK government announced the resignation of the Post Office chairman due to the Horizon IT scandal, which resulted in many sub-postmasters being wrongfully convicted.
Business Minister Kemi Badenoch and Chairman Henry Staunton mutually agreed to his departure after a discussion. An interim replacement will be named soon, and a search for a permanent chair will begin in the future. Staunton had been on the Post Office board since December 2022.
The British public's outrage has prompted action to overturn convictions and offer compensation for the affected sub-postmasters, who faced unjust charges between 1999 and 2015.
Fujitsu, the developer of the faulty Horizon software responsible for the convictions, is under scrutiny and has committed to cooperating with the UK government on corrective measures, including compensation.
Postal Minister Kevin Hollinrake has suggested that Fujitsu contribute significantly to the compensation funds required for the scandal.
