UK PM Sunak Faces Defeat as Vote to Delay Rwanda Asylum Treaty Passes

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faced a defeat when the House of Lords voted in favor of a motion to delay a treaty aimed at deporting certain asylum seekers to Rwanda, a plan that is yet to be implemented.

Sunak's government, attempting to overcome legal challenges that deemed the plan unlawful, had signed a treaty with Rwanda to ensure the safety of those deported.

Despite the possibility of ministerial override, the motion passed in the Lords with considerable opposition, indicating challenges to the government's legislation in the upper house.

Former Attorney General Peter Goldsmith expressed that it was unprecedented for the Lords to vote to halt a treaty's ratification.

Sunak, hoping to initiate deportation flights soon, faces internal party divisions and the Lords' potential to delay the bill for up to a year, which could affect its implementation before the next general election.
