UK Pension Transfer Boom Persists with Deals Worth $11 Billion Struck

The UK is witnessing a continued surge in pension transfers, with two major insurers finalizing deals totaling $11 billion to manage corporate pension responsibilities. The trend, fueled by the desire to mitigate risk in uncertain markets, includes Legal & General's record-breaking $6.6 billion (4.8 billion pounds) agreement with the Boots Pension Scheme the UK's largest by value. Simultaneously, Rothesay has secured a $5.5 billion (4 billion pounds) transaction with part of the Co-operative group's pension scheme.

These arrangements, known as bulk annuities, could make 2023 the busiest year yet for the sector, surpassing the usual $41 billion (30 billion pounds) annual rate in the UK. Despite the sector's growth, regulators like the Bank of England have warned insurers to be cautious of over-relying on reinsurers, especially foreign ones, due to potential solvency issues.

Legal & General has attributed the boom to stronger pension funding levels and proactive measures to shield against volatile markets and rising interest rates. The company has secured $18.4 billion (13.4 billion pounds) in global pension risk transfers this year, a significant increase from the previous year, and aims to expand this business line, supported by a robust solvency ratio of 224%.

Boots, a renowned British retailer in health and beauty with a large presence and workforce, is part of this growing trend towards insuring pension liabilities.
