The incident occurred at a Downing Street function, traditionally off-limits to press, but reported by the Sunday Mirror due to the severity of the comment.
Critics from the Labour Party, including the Shadow Minister for Domestic Violence and Safeguarding, Alex Davies-Jones, and Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned Cleverly's remarks, highlighting the need for cultural change at high levels of government.
Previously in November, Cleverly had also apologized for breaching parliamentary etiquette with an insult toward a Labour MP.
