UK Markets Reflect Mixed Fortunes as FTSE 100 Rises Amid Divergent Performances

JD Sports Faces Challenges, Ocado Surges, and Housebuilders Rally As Varied Sector Results Shake the FTSE

15 January 2025 · 03:18 UTC

Markets in the UK have experienced significant fluctuations as retail, energy, and housebuilding sectors respond to distinct pressures and opportunities.

JD Sports Fashion saw a notable decline in share value following a lackluster post-Christmas update, while Ocado enjoyed a substantial rally driven by strong festive sales.

Meanwhile, housebuilders such as Persimmon saw upward movement due to positive forecasts.

JD Sports Fashion's shares hit a post-pandemic low, with the company delivering a second successive post-Christmas downgrade.

After facing a particularly challenging November, offset by improved trading during Black Friday and the festive period, the retailer reported gross margins exceeding last year's figures and finished the period with "a clean inventory," according to CEO Régis Schultz.

Despite this, profit guidance between £915 million and £935 million fell 4% below City consensus for the financial year ending in January.

JD Sports also takes a cautious outlook for the upcoming financial year amid elevated promotional activity impacting results.

Following the company's update, broker Peel Hunt adjusted its price target downward to 200p.

Elsewhere in the FTSE 100 index, Games Workshop, debuting its first results as a blue-chip company, reported robust profits and revenue growth.

However, its shares fell 3% post-announcement despite achieving a 14.3% rise in core revenues and a 33% increase in profits over six months.

CEO Kevin Rountree attributed Games Workshop's success to its cultural values emphasizing humility, ensuring the company remains focused on managing diverse market scenarios.

In other sectors, Persimmon led a rally among housebuilders, projecting a 2024 performance at the upper end of market expectations.

Persimmon's stock rose by 6% following its announcement of a 7% year-on-year completion increase, with sales and customer inquiries performing consistently above the previous year's levels.

Ocado, a joint venture with M&S, witnessed a 12% share surge after reporting a strong sales increase during its financial year's last quarter.

With retail revenues climbing to £2.68 billion, Ocado attributed its growth to rising order volumes and achieving a milestone of 500,000 orders per week.

CEO Hannah Gibson expressed satisfaction with Ocado's momentum through 2024, highlighting the company's accelerating fourth-quarter sales.

Despite positive news for some, BP faced a 2% share decline after reporting a reduction in its fourth-quarter oil and gas production and delaying a scheduled investor event.

Compounded by weaker refining margins and expected impairments, BP is adapting to a shifting energy landscape and operational challenges.

The FTSE 100 rose by 8.21 points to 8232.40, buoyed by gains among housebuilders, select industrials like Smiths Group, and commodity players such as Glencore and Rio Tinto.

In contrast, energy major BP and JD Sports trailed the pack amidst ongoing market headwinds and strategic reassessments.

The broader market picture remains mixed, with sterling steadying near $1.22 and Brent crude holding above $80 a barrel.

As global economic conditions and sector-specific dynamics continue to evolve, the FTSE 100 reflects varied performances, signaling complex market conditions in early 2024.
