The UK's new Labour government announced plans to explore effective regulation of powerful artificial intelligence (AI) models, though it stopped short of proposing specific laws. In a speech to open the new session of parliament, King Charles outlined Prime Minister Keir Starmer's legislative agenda, including over 35 new bills addressing various issues from housing to cyber security.

The government intends to establish appropriate legislation for developers of the most advanced AI models. This follows efforts by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to position the UK as a leader in AI safety, including hosting a global summit and launching the world's first AI Safety Institute.

AI-focused investment group Air Street Capital's Nathan Benaich expressed relief that the government is not rushing into frontier model regulation. While Starmer has pledged new AI laws, his government is proceeding cautiously to maintain the UK's competitive advantage.

Some AI experts argue that new legislation is urgently needed due to the rapid integration of AI tools into daily life. Gaia Marcus, director of the Ada Lovelace Institute, emphasized the necessity of a bill to address both the benefits and risks posed by AI to society.
