Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has emphasized that this military support demonstrates the UK's unwavering commitment to Ukraine's cause.
He condemned Russia's large-scale offensive, which involved 158 missiles and drones hitting various cities, leaving over 160 people injured. The attacks, which Shapps described as both murderous and a sign of desperation, aimed at several cities including Kyiv and Lviv.
The additional package is expected to replenish UK-donated air defence systems that have a high precision rate in intercepting Russian drones and missiles. It is designed to shield civilians and critical infrastructure.
Given their successful adaptation to the advanced short-range air-to-air missiles, the Ukrainians have requested more. The UK has already provided significant military assistance, including Challenger 2 tanks, artillery, and precision strike capability, amounting to about £4.6 billion.
Despite this latest support, there is speculation about the sustainability of Western backing for Ukraine amid a nearly two-year-long war and rising tensions in the Middle East.
While the US has recently approved further aid, future support is contingent on Congressional approval, and there is debate within Europe, highlighted by Hungary's blockage of an EU financial aid initiative.
Shapps warns that President Putin is testing the West's determination, yet insists the UK stands resolute in supporting Ukraine's victory, evident by their impact on the Russian Black Sea fleet. He urges Western unity and increased efforts to ensure Ukraine's triumph.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has also publicly denounced Putin's aggressive actions, reiterating the UK's pledge to support Ukraine's fight for freedom and democracy "for as long as it takes." Ukrainian President Zelensky continues to call on Western allies for enhanced air defences against such attacks.
