UK Experiences Holiday Relief: Inflation Drops to Lowest in Two Years for November
The UK's cost of living crisis appears to be easing, with recent inflation numbers indicating a decline. In November 2023, prices dipped by 0.2% from October—marking the first decrease in four months. Year-over-year inflation also sharply fell to 3.9% from 4.6%, hitting a low not seen since September 2021, as per the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Transport costs saw the biggest price drops, aided by lower oil and gas prices. Additionally, expenses in housing and utilities kept declining. Despite increases in food, drink, tobacco, clothing, and health, price growth was slower than the previous year. Still, households may not immediately feel relief as food inflation remains high at 9.2%.
Economists React
Danni Hewson from AJ Bell hailed the inflation update as great news for the UK economy, and Nicholas Hyett of Wealth Club noted the significant drop, although warning that the UK's rate of inflation still surpasses that of the US and Europe.
However, caution remains. With core inflation more than double the UK's 2% target, significant further reductions are necessary before the Bank of England considers cutting its primary interest rate, currently at a peak of 5.25%. Optimism is brewing among investors, anticipating a potential rate cut as soon as March.
Hewson also shared that there's a growing belief that by next year, economic conditions could greatly improve, with some speculating rates could fall below 4% by the end of the year.
Analysts also caution that recent price falls could reverse if international events, like turmoil in the Red Sea, affect goods and energy costs. Hewson invites celebration over this progress but reminds us of the journey ahead.
