According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the economy expanded by 0.2%, driven by a surge in retail and online sales, coupled with increased construction activity. Services, including retail and hospitality, were the primary contributors to this growth, notably recovering from a December decline.

Despite early signs of an upturn, TV and film production, legal services, and pharmaceuticals experienced downturns. Over the last three months, the economy saw a slight contraction with ongoing strikes in healthcare and transport potentially affecting growth.

As Chancellor Jeremy Hunt acknowledges economic progress, Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves argues the UK is still lagging. Experts warn the recovery might be hampered by interest rate hikes and labor shortages, with the next budget announcements eagerly anticipated amid predictions of subdued growth for the year.
