UK Disease Agency Declares National Incident as Measles Cases Surge
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced a national alert due to a rise in measles cases. Dr. Jenny Harries, the agency's head, emphasized the urgent need for increased vaccination against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), particularly in regions with low vaccination rates.

Young children, infants, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable.
The West Midlands, where Harries visited, has experienced the most infections outside of London. Since October, there have been 319 confirmed and probable cases, mostly in Birmingham involving children below ten years old.
The concern is that with insufficient vaccination coverage, the disease could spread to other areas.
Vaccination rates are at a ten-year low, with only 84.5% of five-year-olds receiving both MMR doses in 2022-23. Measles cases have surged, with 1,603 suspected instances in England and Wales in 2023, up from 735 the year prior, and 360 two years ago.
