The United Kingdom is poised to take decisive action against any vessels suspected of damaging its vital underwater cables, according to recent statements from UK Defence Secretary John Healey.

In a parliamentary address, Healey outlined changes to the Royal Navy’s engagement protocols, emphasizing a robust response to 'grey war' threats, particularly those emanating from Russian activities.

The Russian reconnaissance ship Yantar, which has drawn attention in the past, was recently monitored by the British naval vessel HMS Somerset as it traversed the English Channel en route to the North Sea.

Healey has claimed there is evidence of increasing Russian aggression, suggesting Moscow’s operations are testing the boundaries of international law.

A notable incident involving the ship Eagle S, suspected of dragging its anchor along the seabed and damaging undersea cables between Finland and Estonia, underscores the international scope of these tensions.

Finnish commandos seized the vessel during an ongoing operation that included British collaboration in monitoring suspected Russian fleets involved in sanctions violations and espionage.

Healey elaborated on the significance of these cables, stating on LBC radio that the growing incidence of sabotage poses a direct threat to national security, highlighting the critical role these cables play in daily life and international connectivity.

He insisted on the importance of conveying firm deterrent messages to Russian leadership, underlining the UK's commitment to defending its strategic interests.

The measures come as part of a broader defense strategy encapsulated in an eight-year contract known as Unity, which not only aims to safeguard over 4,000 jobs and create 1,000 additional roles but also fortifies the UK’s national security posture against evolving threats.
