UK Court of Appeal Rules Deportation of Asylum Seekers to Rwanda is Unlawful

The Court of Appeal in the UK has ruled that the policy of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda is unlawful.

29 June 2023 · 23:39 UTC

The decision was welcomed by asylum seekers who have been living in uncertainty and anxiety.

The ruling concluded that there are deficiencies in the asylum system in Rwanda, which means that there is a "real risk" that asylum seekers could be returned to their home country and face persecution or other inhumane treatment.

The Refugee Council has called for the Government to rethink its approach, while the IRC UK has urged the Government to invest in its own asylum system and scale up safe routes.

The Prime Minister disagrees with the decision and plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.
