In his remarks at a Westminster reception, Lord Cameron emphasized the need to provide a clear path toward peace in the Middle East by offering the Palestinian people a vision of steady progress towards a two-state solution.

During his fourth visit to the region since his appointment in November, he mentioned the possibility of early recognition during peace talks rather than waiting for a final agreement.

Lord Cameron called for a competent Palestinian authority to manage Gaza and for Israel to increase humanitarian access. He criticized past efforts, describing the last three decades as a period of failed peace and security for Israel and stressed the importance of acknowledging this to move forward.

Husam Zomlot, head of the Palestinian mission in London, welcomed the UK's potential early recognition as a significant step toward peace.

Conversely, some Conservative MPs, such as Theresa Villiers, expressed concerns, arguing that it might inadvertently incentivize Hamas' violence. However, Minister Andrew Mitchell clarified that the UK would not recognize Palestine unilaterally and would do so when it advances peace.

The Israeli government has not issued a statement on this matter. Lord Cameron remains hopeful about the ongoing negotiations to end the conflict in Gaza, eyeing a sustainable ceasefire and long-term political solutions for enduring peace.

He insists that despite previous failures, the pursuit of peace must continue for the sake of ensuring lasting security.
