UK Competition Watchdog Finds Higher Fuel Prices due to Weakened Competition

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has found that competition in the road fuel market has weakened since 2019, leading to higher prices for consumers.

Supermarkets have increased their fuel margins, and there has been a lack of competitive response from other companies.

The CMA has proposed a "fuel finder" scheme to help consumers find the cheapest fuel in their area, and the government has agreed to change the law to force retailers to comply.

The CMA also recommended the creation of a new body to monitor road fuel prices and take further action if necessary.

Asda was fined for failing to provide information to the CMA's investigation.
