UK Car Insurance Premiums Soar by 43% in One Year, Says ONS

Car insurance premiums in the UK have increased by 43% in the past year, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), with the Association of British Insurers (ABI) reporting an average increase of 16% in the first quarter of 2023.

The cost of car insurance is higher than overall inflation due to several factors, including rising costs for wages, energy, and raw materials needed for repairs.

Insurance companies are also facing higher costs for courtesy cars, which are required in many insurance claims, and for spare parts, which are becoming increasingly expensive due to supply chain issues.

The cost of second-hand cars has also increased significantly in recent years, due in part to a shortage of new cars caused by the pandemic.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has banned car and home insurance providers from charging existing customers more to renew their policies, known as "loyalty premium" or "price-walking".

Providers can still offer higher renewal quotes by comparing with what's on offer through comparison websites and customers are complaining of unexplained price increases.

Insurers are facing higher costs and it is difficult for them to absorb these costs, according to an ABI spokesperson.

To reduce your quote, speaking to your provider to negotiate by phone or online will likely result in a cheaper quote than "auto-renewing" and adding experienced named drivers with no previous claims and insuring more cars with the same provider can help bring your quote down.

The article suggests that paying annually instead of monthly can be more cost-effective as it avoids paying interest.
