The British pound strengthened while bond prices fell, altering market expectations about the Bank of England's interest rate reduction timeline. S&P Global states that activity appears stable but weak, with a further drop in new orders marking a fifth consecutive month.
This PMI aligns with other indications of stagnant UK growth amid the highest inflation among major economies and no GDP growth in Q3. Nonetheless, October saw inflation slow to 4.6%. Despite warnings of persistent inflation and potential rate hikes by the Bank of England, rates have remained unchanged after a series of increases.
Services PMI was positive at 50.5, but manufacturing stayed in decline at 46.7. A CBI survey also reported a significant drop in factory orders. Input costs and wages continued to rise, influencing prices, and while business confidence improved, recession risks persist for next year.
In contrast, the Euro zone's PMI suggested a mild downturn easing in November but projected a contraction this quarter.
