UK Boosts Offshore Windfarm Subsidies Following Crisis Talks

The UK plans to increase subsidies for offshore wind farms following discussions producers had about global energy market challenges. New offshore wind projects will receive a higher starting subsidy of £73 per megawatt hour, a roughly two-thirds increase, to mitigate the impact of rising costs. For floating offshore wind, the subsidy will start at £176 per megawatt hour, up over 50% from the previous £116.

This pricing sets a cap, as companies will bid to supply electricity at the lowest possible price. However, these subsidies will lead to higher household energy bills.

The offshore wind sector has seen a 40% rise in costs due to supply chain inflation and increased interest rates. Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho acknowledged the global challenges impacting the sector, stating the new annual auction is part of the government’s strategy to secure clean energy domestically, which should reduce bills and boost energy independence.

Industry concerns were heightened when no firms participated in the latest clean energy auction due to what they felt was an unfeasibly low ceiling price. The Labour party criticized this as jeopardizing energy security and risking future investment.

Energy Minister Graham Stuart highlighted the government's commitment to maintaining the UK's lead in renewable energy. Dan McGrail of Renewable UK welcomed the government's reinforced support, emphasizing its role in improving energy security, fostering economic growth, supporting jobs, and keeping electricity costs low.
