The submersible, named Titan, is operated by OceanGate Expeditions, and two other people on board are French submersible pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet and the company's CEO and founder, Stockton Rush.
The US Coast Guard is searching for the submersible, which lost contact with a research vessel, the Polar Prince, approximately one hour and 45 minutes into its dive on Sunday morning.
The search is challenging due to the remote location, and the vessel is capable of diving 13,120ft with a comfortable safety margin and has 96 hours of life support.
The Titanic sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg, and the wreckage lies 3,800m under water in the Atlantic.
