Since Hamas's significant attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in the death of approximately 1,140 Israelis, mostly civilians, Western countries have been increasing sanctions against Hamas and its affiliates.
In retaliation, Israeli military actions in Gaza have led to the deaths of nearly 25,300 people, with the majority being women and children.
The sanctions send a strong message that financing terrorism will not be tolerated, according to UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron. These efforts are part of a strategy to weaken Hamas and support a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza by eliminating its power to threaten Israel.
Previous sanctions targeting Hamas and its Iranian benefactors were announced by the UK and the US at the end of the previous year. The newly imposed sanctions involve asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes, although it's uncertain if those sanctioned have assets or recent travel history in the UK.
Among those sanctioned are Zuheir Shamlakh, recognized as a major figure in Hamas's shift towards cryptocurrencies, Ahmed Sharif Abdallah Odeh, a key figure in Hamas's financial operations, Ismail Barhoum from Hamas's political bureau in Gaza, Hassan Al-Wardian, a senior Hamas leader in the West Bank, and Jamil Yusuf Ahmad Aliyan, a senior PIJ official in Gaza.
