Starting from midnight on Sunday, passengers traveling from London City, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, Southend, and Teesside airports will be affected by this change.
These airports, which currently operate with Next Generation Security Checkpoints (NGSC) featuring hi-tech CT scanners that allow a 3D view of bag contents, had previously lifted the restriction.
This rule, initially implemented in 2006 following a thwarted terror plot aimed at aircrafts flying from London to the US, is being reinstated to facilitate improvements to the new checkpoint systems.
A spokesperson for the DfT remarked that the move is temporary and will impact only a limited number of passengers.
Travelers are advised to verify the security requirements with their departure airport prior to their travel.
