Two Women Charged in Stalking Case Involving Madeleine McCann’s Family
Karen Spragg and Julia Wandel face charges related to alleged stalking incidents against the McCann family.
A 60-year-old woman has been formally charged in connection with a stalking investigation involving the family of Madeleine McCann, who vanished in 2007 while on holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal.
The accused, Karen Spragg, resides in Caerau, Cardiff, and is charged with one count of stalking involving serious alarm or distress.
The alleged incidents took place between May 3, 2024, and February 21, 2025, according to the Leicestershire police.
She is scheduled to appear at Leicester Magistrates' Court on Friday.
On the same day of Spragg's court appearance, another individual, Julia Wandel, a 23-year-old from Lubin, Poland, is also set to appear at Leicester Crown Court.
Wandel faces four counts of stalking the McCann family during a period from January 3, 2024, to February 15, 2025. The charges against Wandel include allegations that she attended the family's residence on two occasions: May 2 and December 7 of the previous year.
Furthermore, Wandel is accused of attempting to contact the McCann family through various means, including a letter, phone calls, voicemails, and WhatsApp messages directed at Kate and Gerry McCann.
She is also alleged to have sent Instagram messages to Madeleine's siblings, Amelie and Sean McCann, between January 3 and December 29 last year.
The case has rekindled public attention due to the unresolved nature of Madeleine McCann's disappearance, which has persisted for over 16 years.
The family has been subject to intense media scrutiny and public fascination since the incident occurred.
