Two Suspected People Smugglers Arrested in London, Await Extradition to France

Allegations of Human Trafficking and Money Laundering Connected to Cross-Channel Migrant Crossings
Two men, Lulzim Brahaj, 47, from Albania, and Rebin Sharif, 25, from Iraq, were arrested in London on Wednesday by National Crime Agency (NCA) officers as part of an investigation into people smuggling activities across the English Channel.

Both suspects are wanted by French authorities for alleged involvement in human trafficking and money laundering efforts related to numerous small boat crossings in 2022.

The arrests were made following substantial tracking by the NCA, which indicated that Brahaj and Sharif had recruited illegal migrants intending to cross the English Channel and had laundered the proceeds from their activities between January 2021 and June 2023. The men appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court, where extradition proceedings commenced.

Jacque Beer, NCA Regional Head of Investigations, emphasized the agency's ongoing commitment to combatting people smuggling, stating, "Smuggling gangs risk the lives of the people they transport purely for profit and greed." The NCA plans to continue collaboration with French and European law enforcement agencies to dismantle organized crime networks behind these crossings.

This development follows recent announcements by the UK government regarding new measures aimed at combating people smuggling.

The Home Office indicated that laws are set to be tightened to impose new restrictions on individuals suspected of trafficking, including limitations on their ability to use electronic devices and communicate socially.

Law enforcement agencies will also gain the ability to apply directly for court orders without prior approval from the Crown Prosecution Service.

In recent statistics, the Home Office reported a drop in the number of migrants crossing the Channel, with 1,325 individuals making the journey in late December 2022 alone.

This figure represents a 20% decrease from the record total of 45,774 arrivals recorded for the entirety of 2022.
