Two more systems being monitored in the Atlantic, one likely to reach northeast Caribbean

Two more weather systems are currently being monitored in the Atlantic Ocean and one could become a tropical storm or hurricane that affects the North East Caribbean where the British Virgin Islands is situated.
This is according to the latest weather advisory from the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) today, September 10.

The DDM said the National Hurricane Centre is monitoring six tropical systems - Disturbances 3 and 4 - two of which pose some threat to the territory.

It said these two disturbances would need to be monitored, particularly Disturbance 3.

“Disturbance 3 at this point has a high potential of reaching the North East Caribbean a week from now as a Tropical or a Hurricane. Residents should continue to monitor Disturbance 3 as it progresses and be ready if action is needed,” the DDM said.

The DDM further said Disturbance 3 is centred near 12 degrees North and 15 degrees West and is moving to the west at 15 miles per hour. It is expected to emerge off off the coast of Africa today.

It continued: “This system may then develop into a tropical depression as it passes just south of the Cabo Verde Islands on Friday. Afterwards, it will track in a west to the west-northwesterly direction across the tropical Atlantic. There are indications from our model guidance that this disturbance will pass near the northeastern Caribbean in a week from now. There is a 90 percent chance that the system will develop over the next five days.”

In the meantime, the advisory said the two previously reported tropical storms – Paulette and Rene – as well as two other disturbances located in the vicinity of the United States and the Bahamas, pose no threat to the territory.
