The first incident occurred at 2:35 AM on Bridlepath Way in Feltham, where the battery of a converted e-bike ignited inside a residential property.
Firefighters managed to rescue two dogs from the home; however, a third dog was found deceased at the scene.
Approximately 60 firefighters were deployed to combat the blaze, which rapidly spread throughout the house.
Four individuals evacuated the property during the emergency, with two requiring hospitalization for undisclosed reasons.
Richard Field, deputy assistant commissioner for prevention and protection at the London Fire Brigade (LFB), addressed the media following the incidents, stating, "It cannot be underestimated the level of destruction each of these fires have caused, with both homes completely damaged by fire and smoke." He noted it was fortunate that no human casualties were reported, despite the death of the two dogs.
The second fire involved an e-scooter and occurred just hours later, also attributed to a catastrophic battery failure.
Field emphasized the potential dangers associated with battery-operated vehicles, particularly those that are second-hand or modified using parts from online sources.
In 2022, the LFB recorded 142 e-bike fires and 29 e-scooter fires.
Since January 2023, there have been three fatalities and over 100 injuries linked to e-bike battery failures in London.
Field reiterated the critical nature of addressing battery safety, advising potential buyers to exercise caution when purchasing vehicles that appear to be offered at unreasonably low prices.
Authorities continue to investigate the root causes of these fires as safety concerns regarding battery-operated transportation devices mount.
