Twenty-Nine US States Take Meta to Trial Over Alleged Child Addiction on Instagram and Facebook

State prosecutors are demanding an end to algorithmic features like infinite scrolling and seeking hundreds of billions of dollars in penalties in a case that could force a fundamental redesign of social media.
Twenty-nine United States have initiated a landmark jury trial against Meta in California, accusing the technology conglomerate of deliberately engineering Facebook and Instagram to addict children while misleading the public about the psychological risks.

The trial marks a major escalation in domestic consumer protection enforcement, challenging the core design mechanics of the world's most widely used social media platforms.

Led by prosecutors from California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, the coalition of states is demanding fundamental structural alterations to Meta's business model.

They are petitioning the court to force the removal of engagement-driving features such as infinite scrolling and autoplay videos for young users.

The states are also seeking financial penalties they estimate at $200 billion, a figure Meta's legal team contends could reach $1.4 trillion if maximum damages are applied.

During the trial's opening phase, state representatives utilized internal corporate communications to argue that Meta executives prioritized user retention over safety, deliberately deploying algorithms designed to keep adolescents continually engaged.

Meta's defense rejected the characterization, maintaining that the company operates transparently and has proactively implemented extensive protective measures, including break reminders and automatic overnight notification blocks for underage accounts.

The litigation aligns with an aggressive global regulatory shift toward restricting adolescent internet access.

In late 2025, Australia implemented a nationwide prohibition on social media for children under sixteen, while the United Kingdom is preparing to enforce a similar ban by early 2027. Domestically, the California trial follows a recent New Mexico court decision that fined Meta nearly $1 billion and classified its platforms as a public nuisance—a ruling the company is currently appealing.

The California proceedings are scheduled to last six weeks.

A verdict against Meta will not only impose historic financial liabilities but will legally compel the company to permanently re-engineer the foundational algorithms governing how digital content is delivered to minors.
