In an interview conducted on Air Force One on Friday, Trump mentioned that he has had multiple conversations with Putin, although he did not specify how many times they spoke.
"He (Putin) wants to see people stop dying," Trump remarked to the New York Post.
Neither the Kremlin nor the White House immediately responded to a request from Reuters seeking clarification on Trump's claims regarding his discussions with Putin.
On January 28, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin is open to having a phone conversation with Trump and is waiting for confirmation from Washington regarding its readiness for such dialogue.
During the interview, Trump also revealed plans to possibly meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy next week to discuss steps toward ending the conflict.
The war, which began with Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, is nearing its third anniversary.
Since it began, the conflict has led to substantial casualties, with thousands of deaths reported, mainly among Ukrainians.
Trump characterized his past relationship with Putin as positive and asserted that he possesses a concrete plan to resolve the fighting, although he did not provide specific details.
He expressed urgency, saying, "I hope it's fast. Every day people are dying. This war is so bad in Ukraine. I want to end this damn thing."
The situation remains complex, with ongoing international efforts aimed at supporting Ukraine and addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by the war.
