Speaking to reporters, Trump noted that while he believes Moscow desires to conclude its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it is possible that the Kremlin is employing stalling tactics to prolong negotiations.
Trump referenced his own past experiences in negotiations, suggesting that such tactics are not uncommon.
The backdrop of these comments comes as the United States and its allies seek to facilitate a peace deal between Kyiv and Moscow.
Accusations have surfaced from Ukraine and its partners that the Kremlin is obstructing progress by introducing various demands that complicate the path to a resolution.
Recently, Ukraine had agreed to an initial proposal for a 30-day ceasefire; however, this proposal was swiftly rejected by Putin.
Trump's remarks were made after a reporter from a conservative U.S. news channel asked whether he believed the Kremlin was purposely dragging its feet in the negotiations.
In a related development, following peace talks held in Riyadh, the White House announced that both Ukraine and Russia had agreed to a temporary pause in hostilities in the Black Sea region.
However, the Kremlin’s response highlighted that this naval truce would only be initiated contingent upon the lifting of certain U.S. sanctions on Russian financial institutions, a detail absent from the White House's statement.
In another instance of escalating tensions, Kyiv and Moscow had reached an agreement last week to implement a monthlong cessation of strikes targeting each other’s infrastructure and energy facilities.
This agreement was reportedly brokered during a conversation between Trump and Putin.
Nonetheless, shortly after the deal was established, Russia conducted drone strikes against Ukrainian targets, including a hospital and energy substation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the immediate fallout from the drone strikes, suggesting that the ceasefire was already failing.
His observations were made in the context of ongoing air alerts in various regions of Ukraine, indicating the persistent threat of conflict despite recent agreements.
