Trans women could be counted as women in Senedd elections

Transgender women could be counted as women under plans for future gender-equal Senedd elections.

In Wales, there's a proposal for gender-equal elections in the Senedd (Welsh Parliament). It suggests that political parties should have equal lists of male and female candidates, including transgender women.

This has sparked both support and opposition. While LGBTQ+ rights groups argue for inclusivity, the Women's Rights Network (WRN) opposes it, accusing the government of promoting a "toxic ideology."

The legislation aims to take effect in 2026 but faces potential legal challenges. The draft bill explicitly includes transgender women in the definition of "woman" and allows for future amendments. The UK government has blocked similar plans in Scotland.
