This pilot program aims to enhance the travel experience for passengers in Yorkshire and the East Midlands who download a dedicated smartphone application.
Under the initiative, the app will generate a barcode that can be scanned by ticket inspectors and at station barriers.
The DfT stated that passengers would benefit from time savings and a guarantee of the best ticket value available on the day of travel.
Rail Minister Lord Hendy highlighted the successful implementation of contactless ticketing in improving ease of navigation for passengers and attracting increased ridership to the rail network.
He emphasized the need to extend these benefits to other major cities across the North of England to enhance the economic advantages that streamlined ticketing can provide.
Jacqueline Starr, CEO of the Rail Delivery Group, expressed commitment to improving ticketing systems, aiming for a simpler fare structure that aligns with passenger expectations and fosters long-term growth in rail travel.
In conjunction with this trial, the Government has initiated the procurement process to select suppliers who will implement the system on specific Northern and East Midlands Railway services.
Alex Hornby, commercial and customer director at Northern, remarked on the traditionally complicated nature of rail ticketing and welcomed advancements toward simplifying the customer experience.
He noted that over 80% of journeys in their network are now conducted using digital tickets, highlighting a significant shift from physical tickets.
The DfT has indicated that the trials are set to commence later this year.
Meanwhile, contactless ticketing has been a feature of London’s public transport system since 2003. The DfT is also collaborating with authorities in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands to expand contactless ticketing in these regions.
