Tory MP Mark Menzies Suspended over Alleged Misuse of £14,000 in Campaign Funds

A Conservative MP, Mark Menzies, representing the Fylde constituency in Lancashire, has been suspended by the Conservative Party after allegations of misusing campaign funds.
He reportedly asked his former campaign manager for £5,000 to pay off "bad people" who had detained him overnight in a flat.

The investigation is ongoing, and Menzies has lost the party's whip.

He denies the allegations and claimed it was a matter of "life and death." Mr. Menzies, a politician, reportedly paid a £6,500 sum from his office manager's personal savings during a campaign, with the money coming from campaign donations and later being controlled by local Tories.

The payment was made out of fear, as Mr. Menzies didn't have enough savings, but he was told he didn't need to repay it.

Previously, Mr. Menzies had requested £3,000 from campaign funds to cover medical bills and promised to repay the money later.

A report in The Times claims that Conservative MP John Menzies received a total of £14,000 in campaign funds to cover his medical expenses, but none of the money was repaid.

A source close to Menzies denies that it was his suggestion to use the funds in this way.

The MP allegedly received additional payments of £4,000 and £7,000 in November 2020.

The Conservative Party was informed of the allegations in January 2021 when the former campaign manager reported the matter to the chief whip, Simon Hart.
